Dr. Mark Welch of the Ear, Nose, Throat and Allergy Center has finished a two-year fellowship in allergic disorders of the ear, nose, and throat. This makes Dr. Welch one of only four fellowship trained Otolaryngic Allergists in the United States and the only one in Oklahoma. He completed this fellowship at St. John's Oakland Hospital in Detroit, Michigan.

A fellowship is a course of study over a specific length of time undertaken by physicians who have completed a residency in their respective field and are already board certified in their field. Dr. Welch spent five years in residency training after completion of medical school in Otolaryngology/Facial Plastic Surgery. After successfully passing the wrtten and oral examinations required to become board certified in Otolaryngology/Facial Plastic Surgery, Dr. Welch became aware of the need for additional training in allergic disorders. Fifty percent of the patients who present to an ENT's office have an allergic cause.

Rather than practicing allergy "on the side" and refusing to treat patients with no more training in allergy than weekend courses, Dr. Welch applied for and was accepted into a fellowship in Otolaryngic Allergy at St. John's Oakland Hospital in Detroit, MI. Dr. Welch spent the next two years presenting and defending over 500 new allergy patients and thousands of their office visits, allergy testing methods and treatments. Unique to Dr. Welch's training was learning how to effectively diagnose and manage food allergies. Dr. Welch successfully passed the Otolaryngic Allergy boards in May of 2005, which consisted of both a written and an oral examination before a panel of experts in the allergy field.

An ENT (Otolaryngic) Allergist is able to diagnose and treat disorders of the upper respiratory tract caused by allergic conditions. Being an Otolaryngic Allergist as well as an Ear, Nose, and Throat surgeon and specialist, Dr. Welch is able to efficiently diagnose and treat other non-allergic diseases of the upper respiratory track.
